Thanatos

Thanatos is a modern original abstract painting using acrylic paints and cracked clay medium on a stretched cotton canvas. Thanatos uses a simple black white and red colour palette over the textured surface to create a striking composition.

Samuel named the composition Thanatos after it was completed, after the figure in Greek Mythology. Thanatos was the personification of death and was referred to but rarely appeared in person. Samuel unintentionally created a shape in the centre of the canvas which, to him, resembled a silhouette of a winged person. This silhouette, along with the colours of the composition lead him to name the artwork after Thanatos.

The solid shapes Samuel has used is unlike his other works which blend colours together. This modern style painting is Mondrian-esque with its forms and minimal colour palette but with a textured quality.

Thanatos sits within a white stained oak frame measuring 94cm x 64cm. There is a gap between the frame and canvas to show the canvas’ painted edges.
