OPULENCE!

‘OPULENCE!’ is a striking abstract painting using a mixture of materials with gold spray paint to create a heavily textured, monochromatic work of art.

Over several days, Samuel layered plaster, white marble paste and cracking clay medium onto a canvas to create a surface with beautiful depth and a rough and smooth contrast. He printed into the materials using corrugated cardboard and sponges in some areas to create shape and linearity, only to then spray liquid plaster over the surface, playing with the concept of concealment. The finished surface was then coated in gold spray paint which left some areas reflective and others matte. This contrast in reflectivity adds to the paintings beauty and interaction with the viewer, changing with the light in the course of the day and with every angle it is seen.

‘OPULENCE!’ Measures 40cm x 50cm and sits within a white stained oak frame measuring 43.5cm x 53.5cm x 3.5cm with a gap between the canvas and frame to show the gold painted edges.
